At last, the City of Oaks is about to come alive again! In just under two weeks time we will be kicking off our work shoes to celebrate a long Memorial Day Weekend. Whether your spending it with family or friends, there will be plenty of activities to choose from this year. So to make it easier for you, I’ve scoped a few local events for you to check out! From can’t miss concerts to hot air balloon festivals, Raleigh will be the best place to celebrate with your loved ones and honor the men & women who have given their life serving in the U.S. military.

HOT AIR BALLOON FEST
If your bunking with the family this weekend you wont want to miss this unique event this Memorial Day weekend. Going on from Friday-Monday, the Freedom Balloon Fest (admission-free) invites the public to enjoy dozens of hot air balloons as they fill the sky in celebration and remembrance.
Balloons & dancing not your thing? Well then you should go get interactive at the You Are Here: Light, Color, and Sound Experiences exhibit at the North Carolina Museum of Art, which features 20 immersive art installations created by 15 artists from around the world! Such a cute date idea (*cough cough* gentlemen).
LAUGH OUT LOUD
With an 8-5, a new dog, and trying to balance this crazy thing called life, I sometimes forget to relax and not take life too seriously. One of the best ways to remind myself of this is by grabbing my girlfriends and going to the next comedy show in town. This Memorial Day weekend will be a great opportunity to remind yourself of this; to live a little and laugh a lot. Treat yourself one night with one of the most highly-recognized stand-up comedians on the road D.L. Hughley Hughley will be performing live at Goodnight’s Comedy Club, Friday-Saturday, 7:15pm and 10:15pm, or Sun., 7pm.
If you can’t make it to see Hughley, you can get your belly full at the Oak City Comedy Festival, Raleigh’s first comedy festival! This will be a five-day comedy celebration that runs May 22-26 and features some of the best up-and-coming stand up comics and improv/sketch comedy groups.
HEAD TO THE BEACH
Okay so I know this is not based in Raleigh, but it’s quite the no-brainer. There is something about healing powers of the sun & sea that keep me running back for more. If you’ve been working your butt off recently like I have- the beach is calling you. Escape to the N.C coastline and give yourself a break. Personally, I’ll be enjoying my time off with my ass in the sand, beer in my hand in Wrightsville Beach, NC this weekend. Warning – It WILL be crowded here as this is all the local’s favorite spot. Perfect for recent graduates and party goer’s as the beach and downtown areas offer plenty of bars and nightclubs. However, if you want a quiet get away, I would recommend the beaches of Oak Island, Emerald Island, Cape Hatteras, & Topsail Island.
Celebrating this special weekend with family & friends is fun. But please don’t forget the reason for this holiday. I must thank all the veterans, active-duty service members, guardsmen and reservists. You have gone above and beyond your citizen duties by putting your lives at risk for our country & to defend our freedoms that we enjoy every day. Thank you to all the families; the mothers & fathers, sisters & brothers who support our troops and keep vigil for a safe return. We honor you today & every day. Thank you for your service.
